Choose the kind of birthday hunt

For one birthday child, make the final treasure their present and hand them the first clue when you are ready to play. For a party, put enough favors in one basket for every guest. A shared finish lets the whole group celebrate together.

Plan for six clues, then adjust after walking the route. Younger children may prefer three or four obvious stops; confident readers can enjoy a longer trail. Leave space in the party schedule for children to pause, compare guesses and ask for a hint.

Gather six cards, a pencil, removable tape and the final surprise. Choose rooms you can supervise, put fragile items away and tell everyone which rooms are part of the game before you start.

6 birthday scavenger hunt clues, in playing order

Copy the clue text onto six separate cards. Keep the answers on your setup sheet. The final clue leads to a toy box, so replace that destination if your present will not fit or the children might open it before the game.

Where to hide every card

The easiest setup is to work backward from the treasure. Remember: a card is hidden at the answer to the previous clue, not at its own answer.

  1. 1Put the present or favor basket beside the toy box.
  2. 2Put card 6 beside the bed pillow.
  3. 3Put card 5 on the dining table.
  4. 4Put card 4 on the sofa.
  5. 5Put card 3 beside the bookshelf.
  6. 6Put card 2 beside the shoe rack.
  7. 7Keep card 1 to hand to the birthday child. Walk the route from the shoes to the toy box to check it.

Adapt the hunt for ages 3–5 or 6–10

For ages 3–5, draw the destination on each card and read the rhyme aloud. Show a picture of your actual shoe rack or sofa if there is more than one possible answer. Keep the cards visible enough for the children to find them without moving furniture.

For ages 6–10, let the children solve each rhyme before offering a hint. Ask a gentle question such as, “Where do our books live?” instead of sending them to unrelated rooms. You can add a personal detail to a clue without making the route longer.

For mixed ages, rotate the jobs: one child carries the card, one reads or describes the picture, and another looks for the next stop. Large parties can use separate color-coded trails with an adult for each group, so one team does not accidentally remove another team's clues.

Make the finish feel like a birthday moment

Gather the children before opening the final basket. Give each guest a turn choosing a favor, or end with a shared celebration such as singing happy birthday. A handwritten treasure-hunter certificate also makes a simple keepsake.

The clues on this page are free to copy onto your own cards. For a coordinated kit, the CluePanda birthday builder lets you edit the wording and hiding spots, add the child's name and include an invitation, certificate and parent guide. It opens with editable starter clues; paste these in if you want to use this exact trail.

Choose Letter or A4 to match your paper. Preview the parents' guide before printing so that your cards and hiding list stay in the same order.
