How to turn the clues into a treasure hunt

These clues make a trail: each answer tells the children where to find the next card. That is different from a scavenger hunt checklist, where children collect or spot a list of objects in any order. You only need paper, a pencil and a small final surprise for this version.

  1. 1Choose six different hiding spots that are easy for your child to reach. Write one clue per card and number the backs for your own reference.
  2. 2Keep card 1 in your hand. Hide card 2 at the answer to card 1, card 3 at the answer to card 2, and continue that pattern.
  3. 3Put the treasure at the answer to the last clue. Do not put that last card beside the treasure: it belongs at the previous stop.
  4. 4Walk the whole route once before inviting the children to play. Read clues aloud whenever someone needs help.

6 easy clues for ages 3–5

Use a drawing or a photo of the answer beside each clue for children who are not reading yet. Keep the next card partly visible and stay with the group. If you have two sofas or several shoe racks, add the room name so there is only one answer.

Make the clues fit your child and your home

For a first hunt, six cards are a useful starting point. Remove a stop if attention is fading; add more only when the children want a longer puzzle. Reading ability matters more than the number on the birthday cake, so offer picture hints or read aloud at any age.

Check every answer before writing the cards. Replace a towel color, room name or piece of furniture with the exact thing your children will see. Keep the route away from roads, water, hot appliances and places that require climbing.

For a group, let the children take turns holding the card, solving the clue and looking for the next stop. Put enough small rewards at the end for everyone, or choose a shared reward such as picking the next game.
